2026 Aston Martin Vanquish Volante First Drive: Watch Out

Aston Martin CEO Adrian Hallmark has described the brand’s GT flagship Vanquish as a car for those who prefer an analog timepiece, and indeed fancy watches are a perfect frame of reference in which to consider this achingly beautiful bauble’s positioning in the pantheon of six-figure grand tourers. Because, while evaluating it as transportation is our job, and we’ll get to that, getting from point A to point B isn’t really the point of these cars.

AI Quick Summary

The 2026 Aston Martin Vanquish Volante is a luxurious grand tourer with a V-12 engine, emphasizing style and personal expression over performance metrics. Starting at $489,700, it features customizable options and advanced tech like Apple CarPlay Ultra, offering an exclusive driving experience.

Someone contemplating blowing 4-ish bitcoin on a Ferrari, Rolls, Bentley, or Aston Martin grand tourer will not prioritize objective considerations like cornering g’s, 0–60 times, and mpg any more than they do seconds-per-month accuracy when choosing between a Patek Philippe, an Audemars Piguet, or a Vacheron Constantin timepiece. What matters most is how such items subjectively look, make the buyer look and feel, and how they advance the plot of the life story the person tells with the objects they surround themselves with.

Style

On the looks front, we like the Aston Martin Vanquish’s chances against rival front-engine (or no-engine) GTs like the Ferrari 12Cilindri, electric Rolls-Royce Spectre, or Bentley Continental GT amongst such buyers. And while we’ve already hyperbolized extensively over the coupe’s beauty, having now spent a day driving and following other examples of the 2026 Aston Martin Vanquish Volante convertible, we’re thinking this may be a rare instance where the top-down design just edges ahead of its flowing-roof coupe sibling.

Proportion

Packaging a V-12 engine behind the front axle and in front of a two-seat cabin is always a recipe for glorious proportions, but Aston creative director Marek Reichman’s team arguably made more of them than some of his rivals have. Credit is also due the engineers who managed to package that eight-layer K-fold soft top compactly enough not to mar the flowing lines. As a result, the voluptuousness of the rear hips gets accentuated without a roof and backlite interrupting the view.

Rear visibility with the top up is pretty gun-slit-like, and negotiating tight driveways is tricky while peering over that vast hood, but those are valet problems. The coupe/Volante conundrum is like choosing between a skeletonized “openworked” or solid-face watch. Choosing the Volante affords onlookers an unobstructed view of your good taste in cockpit color and trim coordination.

Personalized

Speaking of: While any of Aston’s 100-plus historic colors can be had, the standard Vanquish Volante configurator offers 43 exterior colors—17 greens, 13 blues, six reds, three oranges, two purples, two yellows, and a bronze (the less imaginative can select among 18 blacks/grays and 14 silvers/whites).

Inside are nine suggested mono- and duotone design themes with which to combine 25 leather colors and a dizzying array of welting, stitching, trim, carpet, and headlining choices—and of course Aston Martin’s Q division is only too happy to match a favorite fingernail polish or purse clutch hue. The example we drove sampled heavily from the optional extras catalog and rang in at $610,300.

Stiff

Note that the Volante and coupe models differ very little mechanically. By thickening the walls of some aluminum extrusions by 2 millimeters and reinforcing the structure around the rear of the cockpit, the Vanquish Volante measures 75 percent more rigid than the DB12 Volante, with overall stiffness close to the coupe’s. The 200 pounds of additional structure and roll-over safety gear added to the rear equalize the coupe’s 51/49 percent front/rear weight balance and force a 7 percent increase in rear spring rates that’s balanced at the front with a 7 percent stiffer anti-roll bar. All of this simply ensures the Vanquish coupe and Volante drive the same on their identical tires, shocks, and bushings.

The Drive

Leaving Aston Martin’s Q showroom in Manhattan, we were impressed with the ride quality on Gotham’s mean streets. Expansion joints on the Henry Hudson Parkway were heard more than felt, and we sensed nary a hint of the dreaded “scuttle shake” that’s long bedeviled beautiful British roadsters and Volantes. We also appreciate that mechanical switches allow instantaneous control of the damping, exhaust noise, and more, overriding the drive mode selection (soft suspension with Sport+ sound and powertrain calibration makes a lot of sense on crumbling infrastructure). The steering, with rack-mounted electric assist and a column isolator removed, transmitted more road-input feel than most while sufficiently isolating unwanted vibration.

Acceleration is heavily torque managed in the first four gears in base GT mode, with Sport and Sport+ modes stepping that management down. We sampled all modes on dry roads, and the 2026 Aston Martin Vanquish Volante never threatened to roar out from under us. (Wet and Individual are the other drive modes.) Acceleration rates always felt sufficiently exciting, made more so by …

The Sound

Top-down motoring is the best way to get your $14,400 worth out of the optional titanium catback exhaust system, which alters the quality—not the quantity—of the sound from the base stainless system’s rich, full bass note to a slightly higher-pitched crescendo. It is a sonorous and special noise, but it’s less distinguishable from great inline-sixes than are the best naturally aspirated V-12s. And note that there is some electronic enhancement via the Bowers & Wilkins sound system, but we’re told it merely replaces frequencies lost to the particulate filter. We wish it also replaced the ones lost to the turbos, but we can attest this exhaust sound mostly disappears on the highway, so we can’t recommend against it. (With that super-insulated top up, the cabin is said to be even quieter than the coupe’s at highway speeds, and we believe it. Nevertheless, if your ears influence your impulse bitcoin splurges more than your eyes do, that Fezza Dodici Cilindri may be the play.

Riding in It

Search as we might, we couldn’t find a square millimeter of chintzy material inside. Instead, we found what looked like a titanium Allen-head screw we were told does indeed help fasten the dash to the structure. We love that the top switch can also be used to raise or lower all four windows simultaneously. As the superfast windshield suggests, air flows right over the cockpit, with the wind blocker preventing buffeting and side windows keeping interior noise levels conversational.

On our 90-degree-F drive day, even as all the metal vent-surround trim sweated profusely to prove it’s metal, the A/C struggled to cool us with the top down and windows up. Just as a Seiko watch is more accurate than an expensive mechanical one, Mercedes convertibles with the AIRCAP feature cool occupants better, but that’s a minor niggle.

CarPlay Ultra

Aston Martin is the first manufacturer to offer Apple CarPlay Ultra, which appears on the Vanquish and is downloadable to the DB12 Coupe and later Astons. It integrates more fully with the vehicle’s other systems, allowing CarPlay and Siri control of HVAC and radio functions, vehicle and sound settings, displaying temperature settings on the CarPlay screen, sharing Apple Maps and some other info on the instrument cluster, and more.

With CarPlay turned off, the Vanquish makes good use of the infotainment screen, offering power and torque gauges, and a reasonable native nav system. The driver info screen offers seven different designs—five riffs on the round speedo and tach theme and two all-digital looks, all of which offer four options of additional info to display: trip stats, ADAS, map, or audio.

Is the Vanquish Volante Worth It?

If that’s your question, you’re not the target customer, and you may think you’d get a similar personal prestige bump by spending the same 4 bitcoin to buy all seven of households the census recognizes in West Hampton Dunes a BMW 430i convertible—or a pair of entry Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Selfwinding watches. But then you’d immediately wonder if it wouldn’t be more magnanimous to give each of the roughly 8,000 resident of Hornell, New York, a Swatch Originals watch instead. Only 1,000 Vanquishes will be built each year, with roughly a third of those coming to North America and roughly 40 percent of them being Volante convertibles. Most of us should simply pray that someday we’ll get to see an Aston Martin Vanquish Volante in the wild—hopefully in a delectable color scheme.
