Tested! Pushing the Range Limits of the 2027 Porsche Cayenne Electric

How far can you drive the electric Cayenne on one charge? We found out, sort of.Jered KorfhageWriter

So far, we’ve driven the new electric Porsche Cayenne on- and off-road and have plunged deep into its technical details. Continuing the slow intravenous drip of electrified Cayenne tidbits, here’s our first test of how far you can travel on one charge of the German EV’s 113-kWh battery pack.

The Electric Cayenne Prototype Range Test

We did our best to re-create our standard MotorTrend Road-Trip Range test with a prototype of the coming, all-new 2027 Porsche Cayenne Electric. Porsche’s electric SUV was heavily camouflaged and devoid of all badging, but it wore a set of Pirelli P Zero tires (275/45R21 in front, 315/40R21 out back). Instead of using our in-house GPS sensor to evaluate the total distance traveled, we were forced to rely on the Cayenne’s odometer.

  • Trip odometer: 0 miles
  • Starting SOC (state of charge): 100%
  • Starting range: 365 miles

We began the test with a fully charged battery (113 kWh gross, 108 kWh usable), the tires inflated to the pressure indicated on the doorjamb, and a Porsche engineer riding shotgun (three of us were in it in all). The route was an out-and-back course almost exclusively on the highway, and we used the Cayenne’s adaptive cruise control and lane keeping functions whenever possible. Cabin temperature was set to 72 degrees Fahrenheit, and we maintained a steady speed of 70 mph for the majority of the test.

  • Trip odometer: 20 miles
  • SOC: 94%
  • Range: 336 miles

After a few miles of city traffic, we entered the interstate system and began flowing at 70 mph. Our route was planned using the Cayenne’s software, and it included a turnaround at the halfway point and a return to our starting position. Using past driving history, traffic patterns, temperature, wind, elevation changes, and other factors, the Cayenne Electric continuously updated its range prediction and SOC estimate.

  • Trip odometer: 100 miles
  • SOC: 76%
  • Range: 266 miles

With our route entered into the Cayenne’s navigation software, we assumed it knew that the first 150 miles would include a substantial climb in elevation. In some vehicles, electric and otherwise, the range prediction is heavily influenced by driving history. Meaning, for example, if you start hammering the accelerator, your range prediction will shrink accordingly, as the car predicts you’ll be driving in this manner for the duration of the trip. Likewise, coast down a mountain grade for several miles, and that same range prediction will inflate itself.

Range prediction in the Cayenne Electric calculates multiple factors in addition to driving history, so we watched that figure closely and tried to extract from the Porsche engineer any other data bits the system factors into its algorithm.

  • Trip odometer: 200 miles
  • SOC: 49%
  • Range: 136 miles

After making the turnaround and pointing the Cayenne in a general downhill direction, our range prediction dipped into the negative space and indicated we would arrive at our destination with –6 percent SOC. If the route planner knew of the elevation gain (and subsequent loss) from the get-go, why the sudden dip into scary red negative numbers? We confirmed with third-party traffic apps that there weren’t any backups or other hangups along the way. We were met with shrugs of “I can’t confirm or deny this” when we asked if headwinds (not corporate-speak, either—literally driving into prevailing winds) were being actively calculated. We brazenly pushed, or quasi-coasted forth.

  • Trip odometer: 311 miles
  • SOC: 9%
  • Range: 39 miles

As the range prediction figure dropped below 40 miles, the text on the dash cluster changed to yellow. At this point, most EVs and fuel-slurping vehicles alike will replace your range prediction with “RANGE LOW!” warnings and other slogans urging you to find a fuel station or EV charger. Thankfully, the Cayenne does none of those things and continues to display your range and SOC until the bitter end.

On the final highway stretch, we descend the same grade we originally climbed. As we did that, the range prediction integer once again became positive. We were still stumped. Why didn’t the car originally account for this?! And once again, the engineer with us didn’t provide any context.

  • Final Trip odometer: 350.7 miles
  • SOC: 2%
  • Range: 6 miles
  • Average efficiency: 3.4 mi/kWh

Admittedly, we drove a few laps around the hotel to push the trip odometer over the 350-mile mark. Regardless of how you achieve it, though, 350 miles is a significant distance on the (almost all) highway, whether you’re pumping gas or charging EV batteries.

We learned two things here:

1. Given correct conditions, the Porsche Cayenne Electric can drive 350 miles on the highway on a single charge.

Remember, this was with three passengers, using cruise control almost exclusively, on a highway with minimal traffic and perfect weather.

2. Porsche’s route planning software eliminates many problems of EV driving.

The interface is clean, clear, and rich with information that does not disappear as you near the lower end of the battery’s charge.

What Don’t We Still Know?

Until we can personally test a production-spec 2027 Cayenne Electric, we can’t vouch for how well (or quickly) it charges, nor can we reproduce an accurate MotorTrend Road-Trip Range test yet. Until then, based on our first crack at it, what we did learn is that you can probably drive 350 miles on a single charge in the new electric Porsche Cayenne without much headache.
