Additionally, during two road trips, one to Tucson, Arizona, and another to California’s Yosemite National Park with our road trip warrior and photo director Brian Vance at the wheel, he pushed past 300 miles of primarily freeway driving at a 70-mph or so clip, numbers similar to our MotorTrend Road Trip Range test, in which our Ioniq 6 achieved 292 miles.

For the Yosemite jaunt, Vance brought along a friend and plenty of car camping gear and still travelled 327 miles before stopping at a Tesla Supercharger station in Mojave, California. While the trip was uneventful overall, he did register his displeasure with the Ioniq 6’s power trunk operation (takes too long to open and shut, hard to gauge if it’s obstructed) and space (11.2 cubic feet is small, especially when compared to the Tesla Model 3’s 19.8). On the plus side, he appreciated the car’s lower stowage space between the front seats and its quiet and easy operation as a whole.

A couple of months ago when we drove our long term 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 6 back from Seattle to our Los Angeles home base, we came away disappointed with the overall range we were able to eke out of the car. It was cold and wet, and there were elevation changes, which likely had a negative impact on our freeway runs. Such are the ups and downs of dealing with today’s EVs, namely their somewhat unpredictable nature depending on conditions.

But things have been better since we’ve been back in balmy L.A. Three times we’ve been able to crest the 300-mile mark, and one more we just missed it. One of those was an experiment of sorts to see how far we could go in almost all city driving, primarily to the office and back.

We pushed the Ioniq 6 to 328 miles and probably could have squeezed a few more out of it, with 32 miles of range still showing. Add it up, and you’re right at the car’s 361-mile combined range rating. We weren’t hypermiling, but we weren’t exactly blasting the A/C, either. Optimal mild and sunny conditions no doubt contributed, and the car was also garaged each night. In all, we were able to run the car some 20 hours before recharging.

Supercharged Road Trips

Speaking of Supercharger stations, Vance has also become something of an EV charging expert, and armed with a Tesla-style NACS adapter and the Tesla app, it was easy for him to hook the Ioniq 6 to Tesla chargers, which are abundant in California and Arizona with typically no wait times to access one. There were a couple of issues, though. The Ioniq 6’s rear passenger-side door placement is suboptimal for Supercharger cabinets and can potentially block two charger spots (often drawing sideways looks and ire from Tesla owners), and the peak charging speed maxed out at 96 kilowatts, extending the overall charge time by several minutes as opposed to say, an Electrify America or EVgo DC fast charger, which allow for higher overall charge rates.

Other Notable Charging Notes

Outside of Vance’s supercharges, we’ve been using a mix of other options, from house-installed and other Level 2 chargers, to various DC fast chargers, and even an upgraded Tesla V4 Supercharger. We’ve been mixing 80 percent and 100 percent full charges with the most expensive one costing $35.50 (8 to 81 percent charge at a Tesla Supercharger).

Interestingly, we’ve also been able to push more than 70 kilowatts into the 77.4-kilowatt battery twice recently, once on a Level 2 home charger, and once on the Tesla V4, pushing the range meter into 400s both times (another recent development). We’ve only been able to push 70-plus kilowatts into the battery one other time in 13 or so months and roughly 100 charges we’ve performed in all, and there doesn’t seem to be any pattern to it, strangely.

But the overall pattern we continue to experience from the Ioniq 6 is that of a trouble-free, easy-to-drive EV—one with much improved range since it’s been basking in the California sunshine.
