The new 65-kWh LFP battery is the star of the show and the reason this whole conflagration works. While LFP chemistry doesn’t have the same energy density as lithium-ion, batteries using it are also less fragile. They don’t have the same fire risk, and regular fast-charging and charging to 100 percent don’t wear them down the same way. They’re also significantly cheaper.

This pack provides up to 255 miles of range by Chevy’s estimate, with an EPA estimate to follow. That’s eight miles further than a 2023 Bolt EUV and four fewer miles than a 2023 Bolt EV, all from the same size battery pack.

This new battery allows the ’27 Bolt to charge at up to 150 kW on a fast charger, 2.5 times as fast as the ’23 Bolts. While 150 kW isn’t an impressive peak number these days, what matters more is the charging curve; that is, how long the battery can stay at or near its peak charging rate. Chevrolet hasn’t released details, but it must be good because the company is claiming the new Bolt can go from 10 to 80 percent in 26 minutes, a very good time and particularly impressive considering the low peak charging rate. That same 10-to-80-percent recharge used to take well over an hour.

The new Bolt is also the first Chevy to come with a NACS port standard, allowing it to charge at Tesla Superchargers and Destination chargers without an adapter. It also now comes with Chevy’s Google software integration giving it built-in Google Maps with a route and charging planner we’ve found to be pretty good on other models.

The 2027 Chevrolet Bolt Is the “New” Cheapest EV You Can Buy

After less than two years in hibernation, the original long-range, low-price EV is back as the 2027 Chevrolet Bolt. A Frankenstein’s monster of old and new parts, it will reclaim the title of cheapest EV on the market with a starting price of $29,990 when it goes on sale in the first quarter of next year. How long it sticks around, though, remains to be seen.

Chevy says the new Bolt will be a “limited run” model but doesn’t offer any further detail. We’ve reached out for clarification and will update this story if we receive a reply. The company does say there’s more to come, with an even cheaper base model arriving later next year with a $28,995 starting price, as well as a sporty RS trim that’s mostly an appearance package.

Blast From the Past

As expected, Chevy has reanimated the corpse of the discontinued Bolt EUV to create the new Bolt (just Bolt now, no suffix). Both the Bolt EV and Bolt EUV were cancelled in 2023, but an outpouring of complaints from loyal owners and a market shift toward more affordable EVs convinced Chevy to reverse course.

Doing so quickly and cheaply required reusing as much as possible. In essence, Chevy engineers stuffed a new lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery, “X76” motor (part of the architecture formerly known as Ultium), and NACS charging port into the old Bolt EUV, then spiffed up the interior and exterior styling. The EUV chassis was presumably chosen as it was the more popular variant owing to its three extra inches of wheelbase, which translated to more legroom.

Specs Check: Mostly the Same

We weren’t exaggerating earlier. Aside from the powertrain, every spec for the 2027 Bolt is within a tenth of an inch or tenth of a cubic foot of the 2023 Bolt EUV. Exterior dimensions, passenger space, cargo room, all of it.

Performance is likely to change a bit with the new motor. This one, Chevy says, is designed for efficiency and maximum range; that makes sense since the battery pack isn’t any larger but is less energy dense. As a result, horsepower improves by 10 to 210 hp but torque drops by a whopping 97 lb-ft to 169 lb-ft.

With a lot less shove to get it off the line, we expect the old Bolt EUV’s 6.7-second 0–60-mph time to increase to over seven seconds. On the plus side, it doesn’t have much more weight to move. Chevy says the new one is about 100 pounds heavier, although the last Bolt EUV we weighed was also about 100 pounds heavier than Chevy estimated.

One-pedal driving is standard and can be turned off, though the car will still apply a bit of regenerative braking when you lift off the accelerator and blend regenerative and mechanical braking when you step on the brake pedal to maximize energy recovery and thereby range.

What Else Is New?

The exterior styling, which we’ve already seen thanks to a sharp-eyed Instagrammer, is updated here and there but instantly recognizable as a Bolt. The most consequential change, to us, is fixing the taillights. No more weird non-taillights in the normal spot and actual taillights down in the bumper; they’re now where they belong, just below the rear window.

Inside, the screens are the big story. The dashboard design is mostly the same save a storage cubby on the passenger side and now features an 11.0-inch instrument cluster screen that’s finally reconfigurable and an 11.3-inch infotainment screen with Google Built-In. Unfortunately, being a Chevy EV, there’s no CarPlay or Android Auto because GM still hasn’t reversed course on that policy for its EVs. At least the touch-sensitive controls below the screen have been replaced with physical buttons and knobs for the climate control.

As with the old Bolt EUV, hands-free Super Cruise is available on the new model and integrated with Google Maps to show you which roads it works on and how much time you’ll spend with your hands off the wheel. It also features fully automatic lane changes and the ability to put you in the correct lane before any exit or interchange.

A heat pump takes care of the heating and cooling of the interior and the powertrain, which increases efficiency. The battery will also automatically pre-condition for the fastest charging when you set a fast charger as your destination. It can also do bidirectional charging, which when hooked up to a GM home charger allows you to power your house off the car battery.

Chevrolet Bolt 2027 CELL CHARGING

Notable options include a wireless phone charger, panoramic sunroof, heated and cooled seats, heated steering wheel, and 360-degree camera. Even if you don’t spring for Super Cruise, adaptive cruise control and lane keeping are standard. You can also download apps to the infotainment screen including games and streaming video services to wile away those 26-minute charging stops. You can also ask the Google Assistant to do things such as change the temperature or open your smart home’s garage door.

The 2027 Bolt will come in seven colors with three 17-inch wheel/color options. The RS trim will get gloss black wheels and roof rails, a grille badge, and an exclusive paint color and interior trim combo.
