According to naamsa, a total of 38 772 new vehicles were exported in September 2025 – representing a 32.9% (or 9 592 unit) increase compared to the 29 180 units exported in September 2024. Last month saw an increase of 1 272 units exported compared to the 37 500 units exported in August 2025. Additionally, the year-to-date vehicle exports saw a 6% increase over the same period last year, representing market resilience and growth despite global supply chain disrupters and US automotive tariffs.

Volkswagen remained South Africa’s top vehicle exporter in September 2025, despite naamsa reporting 1 274 fewer units were exported from the Wolfsburg brand’s Kariega assembly line, where the Polo and Polo GTI are exclusively produced, to global markets. Most notably, Toyota almost doubled its exports in September 2025 compared to August 2025, with the Japanese automaker’s 3 368-unit increase in exports relegating Ford and BMW to third and fourth place, respectively. Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa saw a similar decrease in exports to Volkswagen in the ninth month of this year, registering a decrease of 1 275 units in September 2025. BMW Group placed fourth with 7 060 units, 1 860 units more than the previous month. Mercedes-Benz South Africa retained fifth position, despite exporting 550 units less than August 2025.
