In 2016, Volvo Cars pledged to sell one million electrified cars by 2025. Now, less than ten years later, the company achieved that goal by delivering its millionth plug-in hybrid (PHEV). Since 2019, every new Volvo has featured some form of electrification – whether mild-hybrid, PHEV, or all-electric (EV) – building towards the Swedish brand’s ambition to become a fully electric automaker by 2040.
Volvo’s PHEVs played a pivotal role in reaching this milestone, with the millionth car sold being a PHEV. These models accounted for 23% of Volvo’s total global sales – rising from 46 000 units in 2019 to 117 000 in 2024. The XC60 and XC90 PHEVs remain among Volvo’s most popular offerings worldwide.
Earlier this year, Volvo introduced its first long-range PHEV, the XC70, which offers a claimed electric-only range of just over 200 km. The flagship ES90 sedan, which has been confirmed for South Africa, is among Volvo’s newest EVs, while the XC60 and XC90 continue to anchor the brand’s electrification strategy in key markets such as Sweden, the US, and China

In South Africa, Volvo leads the local EV sector, with the EX30 being the country’s best-selling EV. Building on this success, Volvo has partnered with GridCars to provide customers added value: a two-year charging credit worth R12 000, a GridCars home charger valued at R7 500, and a Wi-Fi dongle with 10 GB of Vodacom data per month for three years.
